Overdraft Protection

Overdraft Protection at Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union applies to all transactions and may help prevent overdrafts by automatically transferring funds to your checking account from another savings account you may have at Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union at no charge or from your line of credit subject to interest charges.
Overdraft Protection automatically transfers funds in increments of $100, from your designated savings account or approved line of credit, to cover a transaction in your checking account. When a transaction is made that exceeds the available balance in your checking account, Overdraft Protection makes the automatic transfer to cover the transaction. Overdraft Protection from a line of credit requires completion of a loan application and is subject to credit approval.
It can be used to cover in-person withdrawals, checks, debit card transaction, ACH (Automated Clearing House) transactions, online bill pay and possibly other electronic means.
To utilize Overdraft Protection please visit one of our branches or call us at 808-930-7700.
You will not be covered by Overdraft Protection if you have insufficient available funds in your savings account, or line of credit, to cover the overdraft amount in your checking account. Overdraft Protection is also restricted to a total of six (6) uses per month, however there are other automated transfers that count towards that six (6) use limit.
There are no charges for Overdraft Protection. You are limited to six (6) uses per month in combination with other applicable transfers.

Courtesy Pay

This program saves you the inconvenience of having your checks or other transactions returned due to insufficient available funds in your account. With Courtesy Pay, your transaction may get paid even if you do not have sufficient available funds in your account. You avoid the embarrassment, the hassle and better yet you avoid the merchants’ Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF) fees.
When a transaction is made that exceeds the available balance in your account it will be honored, up to the appropriate limit that is set for your account. Your account will be in the negative for the transaction amount plus the Courtesy Pay Fee of $25. This fee is assessed every time Courtesy Pay is used. You must deposit the amount needed to bring your account out of a negative balance within every thirty-two (32) day period.
Courtesy Pay applies to overdrafts created by in-person withdrawals, checks, ACH debits and transfer requests over the phone, as well as recurring debit card transactions, everyday debit card transactions and ATM transactions up to the limit that is set for your account.

You must Opt-In for everyday debit card and ATM card transactions to be eligible for coverage, excluding Small Business Checking Accounts.

Whether your overdrafts will be paid is discretionary and we reserve the right not to pay. Your account must meet minimum qualifications to be considered eligible for the Courtesy Pay program.

There is a $25 fee every time Courtesy Pay is used.

If eligible, Courtesy Pay will cover appropriate transactions up to the limit that is set for your account (including assessed fee of $25 per use).

Check Advantage (personal) checking and Small Business Checking accounts have a maximum limit of $500. Money Manager and Premium Saver checking accounts have a maximum limit of $1,000.
  • A link to another savings account or a line of credit may be a less expensive option than an overdraft. A single larger overdraft will result in just one fee, as opposed to multiple smaller overdrafts. Good account management is the best way to avoid overdrafts.  Use our mobile banking, internet banking and telephone services to keep track of your balance. For additional financial education resources, please visit www.mymoney.gov.
  • The $25.00 Paid NSF Fee that is charged if you overdraw your account is the same fee amount that is charged if an item is returned as unpaid. If multiple items overdraw your account on the same day, each item will be assessed an appropriate Paid NSF Fee or NSF Fee of $25.00. All fees and charges will be included as part of the Courtesy Pay limit amount. Your account may become overdrawn more than the Courtesy Pay limit amount because of fees.
  • Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union authorizes and pays transactions using the available balance in your account. Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union may place a hold on deposited funds in accordance with our Member Service Agreement, which will reduce the amount in your available balance.
  • The available balance for checks, ACH items, recurring debit card transactions, telephone transactions and teller transactions  is comprised of the ledger balance, less any holds on deposited funds and any debit card holds, plus the amount of the Courtesy Pay limit amount and any available Overdraft Protection.
  • The available balance for ATM and everyday debit card transactions on accounts with Standard Coverage is the ledger balance, less any holds on deposited funds and any debit card holds, plus any available Overdraft Protection, but does NOT include the Courtesy Pay limit amount.
  • For accounts with Extended Coverage, the Courtesy Pay limit amount is included in the available balance for authorizing ATM and everyday debit card transactions.
  • If an item is returned as unapid because the available balance in your account is not sufficient to cover the item and the item is presented for payment again, Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union will charge an NSF fee each time it returns the item because it exceeds the available balance in your account. If, on representment of the item, the available balance in your account is sufficient to cover them, Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union will pay the item, and, if Courtesy Pay was utilized, charge a Paid NSF Fee.
  • There is no limit on the total Paid NSF Fees or NSF Fees per day we will charge.
  • This describes the posting order for purposes of determining overdrafts. Our general policy is to post items throughout the day and to post credits before debits. Checks and ACH transactions are processed in order of lowest to highest dollar amount. Debit card, check, bill pay and ACH transactions are posted in batches throughout the day. ATM, POS, teller, online and telephone transactions are posted in the order presented; however, because of the many ways we allow you to access your account, the posting order of individual items may differ from these general policies. Holds on funds and the order in which transactions are posted may impact the total amount of Paid NSF Fees or NSF Fees assessed.
  • Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union will not authorize debit card or ATM transactions unless your account’s available balance (including Overdraft Coverage Options) is sufficient to cover the transactions and any fee(s).  Under payment system rules, Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union may be obligated to pay debit card transactions when the item exceeds the available balance in your account at time of presentment.
  • Giving us your consent to pay everyday debit card and ATM overdrafts on your account (Extended Coverage) may result in you incurring Paid NSF Fees for transactions that we would otherwise be required to pay without assessing a Paid NSF Fee. However, this would allow us to authorize transactions up to the amount of your Courtesy Pay limit amount and may also help you avoid overdrafts in excess of your available balance. If you consent to Extended Coverage on your consumer account, it will remain on your account until it is revoked by you or terminated by Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union.
  • Please be aware that the Courtesy Pay limit amount is not included in your available balance provided through online banking, mobile banking, Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union owned  ATMs or other ATMs available to Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union’s members.
  • Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union will place a hold on your account for any authorized debit card transaction until the transaction settles (usually within three business days) or as permitted by payment system rules.  In some cases, the hold may exceed the amount of the transaction.  When the hold ends, the funds will be added to the available balance in your account.  If your account is overdrawn after the held funds are added to the available balance and the transaction is posted to the available balance, a Paid NSF Fee may be assessed.
  • Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union will not pay items if the available balance in your account (including the Courtesy Pay limit amount, if applicable) is not sufficient to cover the item(s) and the amount of any fee(s).
  • A Courtesy Pay limit of $500.00 will be granted to eligible Share Draft Checking and Small Business Checking accounts opened for at least 60 days and in good standing.
  • A Courtesy Pay limit amount of $1,000.00 will be granted to eligible Money Manager Checking and Premium Saver Checking accounts opened for at least 60 days and in good standing.
  • Courtesy Pay is not a line of credit; it is a discretionary overdraft service that can be withdrawn at any time without prior notice.
  • Courtesy Pay may be suspended if you default on any loan or other obligation to us, your account becomes subject to any legal or administrative order or levy, if you fail to maintain at least the minimum par value of shares, if you fail to maintain your account in good standing by not bringing your account to a positive balance within 32 days for a minimum of one business day or if you fail to maintain any other eligibility requirement. You must bring your account balance positive for at least one business day to have the Courtesy Pay limit amount reinstated.
  • Member and each Authorized Signer will continue to be liable, jointly and severally, for all overdraft and fee amounts, as described in the Member Service Agreement. The total (negative) balance, including all fees and charges, is due and payable upon demand.
