About Us We have a long, rich history here in the islands. Find out why you should join our HCFCU ohana.
Special Message from the President March 23, 2012
As valued members of Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union, I am reporting to you a situation that has taken place within our credit union and the necessary actions that have been executed to rectify this incident.Last year, a petition drive to nominate HCFCU Board candidates was initiated internally by some of our employees, and a complaint was reported by a member that felt their private information was accessed improperly by HCFCU employees without their authorization. It is our duty to protect our member privacy and to investigate all complaints. Based on the severity of the complaint, an independent attorney with investigative experience was contracted to examine the allegations.
Results of this independent investigation concluded that member account information was accessed by HCFCU employees on multiple occasions in certain branches and departments without member authorization, which is in violation of our member’s privacy. Findings of the investigation will be turned over to the appropriate Federal, State or local authorities to determine whether laws were broken. The National Credit Union Association (NCUA) has been notified and in accordance with NCUA regulations, we are notifying all HCFCU members of these incidents by letter.
The foundation of our relationship with members is based on trust and this incident does not reflect our values. Employees found to have violated members' privacy separated from HCFCU prior to the completion of the investigation. In addition, disciplinary measures have been taken against employees who were found to have violated HCFCU's Conflict of Interest Policy, Information Protection Policy and various House Rules. Internal policies and procedures are being reviewed to prevent this from happening again.
It is my hope that these measures will protect our integrity and trust and reinstate our credit union values to our members. While necessary actions have been taken to rectify this situation, I also understand you may have additional questions or concerns regarding this matter. You may contact me directly at (808) 930-7600 or jamest@hicommfcu.com.
Sincerely,

James Takamine
President/CEO
